Girls Girls Girls (Redux)

These little muses have been a work in progress for a while now and I keep making more.

Girls Girls Girls

A little tricky working on these, they are all 6"x6" and I used a size 4 brush. I think I'm gonna do about 20 more and elaborate a little more on the enviroment.

Sin Drogas

Ahhh, this is a mixed Media piece I did that is probably one of the most self representational pieces I've ever done. It's sort of a self portrait without the portrait. Most of the stuff was either purchased from scrap (a sweeet out-of-the-ordinary craft shop), or found on the street. The images in the background are copies of images from the National Geographic from the month and year I was born. It's hard to tell from the photo, but there is about a .25 inch coating of varnish on the whole thing.

HOME

As you can see by the previous post I've been doing a lot of abstract paintings lately. I like to take a representational painting (sometimes from photos) then take the photo away after I work on it for a while.

All Abstract & Stuff

I've been experimenting with abstraction for the past few months and its a nice break from the academic painting style I've been accustomed to. I drew a lot of inspiration from the ocean and Landscape for these as you can seen.

This little 8"x10" oil piece I did will be in a show at 444 jessie st in San Francisco on December 5th. I hope to sell it but I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm not really sure how to show it? I was rotating it constantly as I was painting it and everyone it seems likes it a different way. What do you think?

Jaded Beauty

This piece was a bit of a stretch for me in the subject matter. I've really been into the work of Michael Hussar lately and this piece definitely reflects that. It's called Jaded beauty because it repressents my home town of Santa Cruz which is in and of itself a beautiful place and it is my home but at the same time I feel like the beauty has been jaded by the lack of drive and motivation by the people that live there. The figure is the death of the place in my heart I once held for it. The owl is me.

Fashion Forward

So for the past year or so I've helped my girlfriend get her blog off the ground by shooting all of her fashion photos for her. This is one of the most recent pics I took.  Her blog has really taken off and I'm proud of her for all she's accomplished with it. To view her blog and all the photos I've taken go to www.popcultureafternoon.blogspot.com

MICROSCOPISM

I guess I was kind of inspired by a Brittle Star for these pieces. I used to find them in the tidepools when I was a kid. A brittle star is like a starfish but is a lot more spindly, and well brittle. Hope you like them :)

Birthday Party!!!!!

Did this one in 03' actually so it's not that recent but I still like looking at it, it's just fun. It was a collaboration with my friend and amazing artist Katie Grey.

SketchBook Collages

I decided to take all of my favorite sketches and small paintings from the past few years and make a few colllages. This is an easy way for me to refer back to them from time to time, it's easier to see what I have done or ideas I have when there hanging on the wall rather than searching through sketchbook after sketchbook. The one on the bottom is from like 1999 to 03' and the one on the top is is 06' to present.

Balance Is A Thin Line

This new one is based on a couple of masks from Indonesia.  I was really taken with the culture there when I went a few years ago. Everyone there believes that art should be a part of daily life and is essential for living in balance. That is what I was trying to convey with this piece, balance.  The checkered patterns represent good and evil in their culture and you find the pattern everywhere as a reminder for them to live their lives with a purposeful balance.

Catskull

11"x14" oil on panel

This little trompe l'oeil I did was selected to be in the annual spring show at the ACADEMY. I'm really excited because there was A LOT of really good work submitted and a lot of people will be seeing it. I'm glad my hard work is starting to pay off.

The One That Got Away (top) Sf Trawler (bottom)

These were both a couple of experimental pieces I did as far as landscape and composition go. I generally like to steer clear of the traditional landscape and I'm pretty happy with how both of these turned out. They are both worked from photos.

Portraits of beautiful people

These portraits were done mostly with a carbothello 645 pencil on toned paper for the redish ones, and the darker ones were done with charcoal pencil. Enjoy!

Spare timeI

In my spare time (which I don't have a lot of) I love taking mass amounts of photos. I rarely ever use photoshop. I like trying to create mood with light and setting. I also like crab dinners, balancing on chains, walking my bulldog, and climbing the same old oak I've been climbing for twenty years.
